Well, as is obvious from the chatbox, I've had some cooling issues all of the sudden with my PC. I think the addition of the 8800 GTS pushed it over the tipping point. I was IDLE at 70C for my AM2 X2 5000+
This is too hot.
I tried to clean out my HSF combo, a decent Thermaltake unit. Well, after getting it as clean as I could without compressed air and still in the case I idle at 60C (still too hot) and under load hit 71C (WAY TOO HOT)
So I'm looking at something to cool better (besides the compressed air to finish a good cleaning), but I have a smallish case.
I'm LOOKING at this thermaltake because it will fit behind my monitors on top of the desk and is easy to deal with, and will help a lot I think. Any ideas gentlemen (LOOSE use of term lol) ? So I'm lazy and also thinking of one of these: This or This "I love hitting people. Just, you know, it's a great feeling. Especially after they've already hit you. Im usually very hesitant when it comes to thermaltake products. I bought a TT h20 cooling system a few years back and it wasnt very good. The pump was way underpowered and died on me within a month. The CPU waterblock that comes included in that kit is grossly inneficient. The coolant they include has a UV sensitive dye in it that is known to clog pumps & cause excessive bearing wear/premature failure supposedly due to larger micron particles in the solution.
Looking over that kit in particular though, it seems alot has changed. The new pump has a decent flow rate of 500l/hr(same as my EHEIM ) and seems alot "beefier" than the old pump design.
This kit also has that big ass 360mm rad which would make a HUGE difference & is prolly that big to compensate for the shitty design of the waterblock
It seems that they switched to 3/8 tubing(actually 3/8od~1/4id) ... Still alot better than the 1/4od~3/16id that they used before.
If i were you & was set on buying that kit, i would order some innovatek .:link:. and prolly a better waterblock (innovatek/koolance /dangerden). A tried and true super efficient h20 block such as the innovatek XXflow .:link:. will cool your cpu VERY well and only costs right @$70.00
You'll also wanna snag a small tube of arctic silver 5, its the best thermal paste out there afaik, a bit pricey but using this paste will drop your temps 3-4degrees over using that shitty cheap ass white crap that they always include. Sometimes youll get an included paste from thermaltake thats really light and its main ingrediant is powdered aluminum. Dont be fooled , this aluminum shit isnt worth a fuck , avoid it. The arctic silver 5 is comprised mainly of .....ya you guessed it! SILVER .:link:.

ou wouldn't believe the cloud of dust and pet dander that came flying out of my heatsink when I used some compressed air in there, unreal.
I cleaned it out, while using a vacuum to snag the nasties out of the air while goin, now, I haven't seen it hit over 65 under load. OK for now, but still, I need to do something better. While re-encoding a DVD movie, again figure that's a decent benchmark of loading teh PCU (it was also installing the java update at the same time and I'm typing), it sits around 55 most the time, with spikes ot about 62.
My MB sits about 41 now, and ambient (sensor in air directly between side intake fan and CPU HSF is like 26.5C.

I dunno man, 55c would give me a heart attack alot people would tell you 55c isnt really that bad but for me, even under load its pretty excessive. I didnt see temps that high when i was still on air cooling.
This is more along the lines of what i like as far as temps,& could still be much better but im slack these days as far as de-dusting my radiator and fans....

Room temp when these temp readings were taken was 70degrees f.

During an hour of BF2 w/ CC, CPU never went above 62C... not that 62 is a good number... far from it. Just that it's acceptable. For now. We'll see what kind of $ I get for my bday, or gift certs, I definitely need at least a better HSF... "I love hitting people. Just, you know, it's a great feeling.
